Inspired by the forest. Guided by wonder.

Summer at Wildwood Childcare Centre is a season of discovery. It is a time for small hands to touch cool moss, for bright eyes to spot eagles over the shoreline, and for young hearts to beat with the rhythm of the West Coast.

Preparation is the foundation of freedom. When a child has what they need, they are free to forget the gear and focus on the magic.

Here is your essential checklist for a summer of wonder.

1. The Signature: Labelling Everything

Lost items are lost moments.

In the excitement of a forest trail or a beach discovery, a favorite sweater or a sun hat can easily be left behind. Labelling is the quiet thread that connects your child to their belongings.

  • The Approach: Use permanent markers or durable, waterproof labels.
  • The Scope: Label every item: from individual socks to the inside of water shoes.
  • The Benefit: Clear identification ensures that treasures return home at the end of the day.

We encourage a sense of responsibility and care for our materials, reflecting our core philosophy of respecting our environment and the tools we use within it.

2. The Essence: A Reliable Water Bottle

Hydration is the fuel for adventure.

North Vancouver summers, while temperate, demand constant replenishment. Our 2026 Summer Camps involve active exploration, climbing, and play. A sturdy water bottle is a child’s most important companion.

  • The Choice: Select a stainless steel bottle to keep water cool throughout the day.
  • The Design: Ensure the lid is easy for small hands to open and close independently.
  • The Routine: Fill it with fresh water each morning, even if the camp provides refills.

3. The Guardian: Sunscreen and Protection

Respecting the sun. Cherishing the light.

The BC sun can be deceptively strong, especially when reflected off the water or filtered through the canopy. Protection is not just a safety measure; it is a habit of self-care.

  • The Application: Apply a base layer of sunscreen before arriving at camp.
  • The Support: Provide a stick or spray for quick, easy reapplication during outdoor play.
  • The Layer: Pair sunscreen with a wide-brimmed hat to protect the face, neck, and ears.

4. The Safety Net: A Full Change of Clothes

Play is messy. Growth is unscripted.

At Wildwood, we believe getting dirty is essential. Whether it is a splash in a stream or a tumble in the tall grass, a wet or muddy child is a child who has truly engaged with their surroundings.

  • The Bundle: Pack a complete set of clothes: shirt, shorts, underwear, and socks.
  • The Storage: Place the spare set in a waterproof wet bag or a simple zip-top bag.
  • The Philosophy: Knowing there is a dry set of clothes waiting allows a child to explore without fear of the "mess."

5. The Explorer: Sturdy Water Shoes

From forest floor to rocky shore.

The North Vancouver landscape is diverse. One hour might be spent on a needle-covered trail, and the next on the slippery rocks of a tide pool. Versatile footwear is the key to safe exploration.

  • The Feature: Look for water shoes with a sturdy rubber sole and a secure heel strap.
  • The Function: Water shoes protect feet from sharp rocks and barnacles while allowing for quick drying.
  • The Fit: Ensure they are broken in before the first day of camp to prevent blisters.

Adventure Awaits

Childhood should be nurtured, not rushed.

By checking these five essentials off your list, you are doing more than packing a bag. You are providing the security and comfort your child needs to step out into the world with confidence.

We look forward to seeing our campers explore, imagine, and grow in the beautiful wild spaces of North Vancouver.
