Inspired by curiosity.
Guided by connection.
Rooted in the land.
In the world of early childhood education, certain names carry a weight of magic. You may have heard them whispered in playgroups or seen them highlighted on school websites. "Reggio Emilia" is perhaps the most famous: a philosophy born in Italy that transformed how we view the smallest among us.
But here on the North Shore, we have something that speaks our local language. Something that takes that same heart and plants it firmly in our cedar forests and coastal mist.
It is the British Columbia Early Learning Framework (BCELF).
At Wildwood Childcare Centre, we call it the "West Coast Reggio." It is the backbone of everything we do. It is why our days feel intentional, why our rooms feel like sanctuaries, and why your child’s childhood is never, ever rushed.
The Italian Heart: What is Reggio Emilia?
To understand why we love the BC Framework, we must first look at the spark that started it all.
The Reggio Emilia approach began in post-WWII Italy. It was a movement led by parents who believed that children needed a new way of learning: one that prioritized their rights, their voices, and their immense potential.
The Competent Child
Reggio Emilia views every child not as an empty vessel to be filled with facts, but as a "strong, capable, and resilient" individual. They are born with a "hundred languages": a hundred ways of thinking, expressing, and understanding the world.
The Environment as the Third Teacher
In this philosophy, the space where a child spends their day is just as important as the person teaching them. A Reggio-inspired room is filled with natural light, open-ended materials (like stones, fabric, and wood), and beauty. It is designed to provoke wonder.
Emergent Curriculum
There are no rigid lesson plans here. If a group of children becomes obsessed with how shadows move across the floor, the "curriculum" becomes an investigation into light and darkness. The learning follows the child.

The West Coast Evolution: The BC Framework
If Reggio Emilia is the inspiration, the BC Early Learning Framework is the application. It takes the best parts of the Italian approach and translates them for our unique community in North Vancouver.
We often tell parents: the BC Framework is Reggio with a West Coast soul.
Living Inquiries
Instead of standard "subjects," the BC Framework uses what we call Living Inquiries. These are ongoing, open-ended questions that educators and children explore together. They aren't checkboxes; they are journeys.
- Well-being and Belonging: How do we feel safe? How do we care for ourselves and others?
- Others, Culture, and Community: How do we live together?
- Communication and Literacies: How do we share our stories?
- Play and Inquiry: How do we wonder?
Truth and Reconciliation
This is where the BC Framework truly shines and differs from its Italian predecessor. It is deeply committed to Truth and Reconciliation. In our programs, we weave in Indigenous ways of knowing. We honour the land we play on: the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples.
We don't just learn about nature; we learn from it. We recognize that learning is holistic, experiential, and tied to place.

Why Wildwood Chooses the Framework
We didn't just pick a philosophy because it sounded nice. We chose it because it aligns with our vision: an inclusive society where children and nature's unique characteristics are honoured.
The Brain-SET Sanctuary
While the BC Framework guides our "why," the Brain-SET Environments Formula guides our "where." Designed by Dr. Kathryn Murray, our rooms are curated to support a child’s brain development.
We know that a calm brain is a thinking brain. By using soft natural aesthetics, warm lighting, and natural textures, we create a sanctuary that reduces overstimulation. This allows the "Living Inquiries" of the BC Framework to flourish.

Hands-On Leadership
At Wildwood, our directors aren't tucked away in offices. They are on the floor. They are in the mud. They are working alongside our certified staff and the children, ensuring that our philosophy isn't just words on a page: it's a lived experience.
A Passion for People
Our educators are more than "childcare workers." They are researchers. They are listeners. They are experts in the "hundred languages" of childhood. They are certified professionals who genuinely love the children they care for, bringing years of experience to every interaction.
Childhood: Nurtured, Not Rushed
In a world that often feels like a race, Wildwood is a pause.
We believe that childhood is a season of curiosity and becoming. When we follow the BC Early Learning Framework, we aren't rushing children toward "kindergarten readiness" through repetitive worksheets. Instead, we are building the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
We are teaching them how to ask questions.
We are teaching them how to collaborate.
We are teaching them how to be citizens of the world.
Community and Connection
Growth doesn't happen in a vacuum. We host numerous parent and community events throughout the year because we believe that "meaningful, collaborative relationships" are the heart of quality care. Whether it's a beach day during our summer camps or a cozy neighborhood gathering, you are part of the Wildwood family.

The Difference You Can Feel
When you walk into Wildwood, you won't see primary-colored plastic and loud, buzzing toys. You will see:
- Light. Streaming through windows and bouncing off natural wood.
- Space. For bodies to move and minds to rest.
- Nature. Inside and out, from the moss we study to the cedar branches we touch.
- Wonder. Captured in the photos and stories we document to share with you.
We are proud to follow the BC Early Learning Framework. It is a sophisticated, world-class approach that respects the child and the land. It is the West Coast way.
